Japan forecasts over 5 mil. auto sales in 2012

Sales of new cars in Japan this year are projected to top 5 million for the first time in 4 years, thanks to planned government subsidies and tax breaks for eco-friendly vehicles.

The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association says sales of new vehicles are expected to total 5 million 15,500 units, an increase of 19.1 percent from the previous year.

Car-sales in 2011 were the lowest in the past 34 years as the March 11th earthquake and tsunami damaged parts-suppliers in the northeastern part of the country.

The association says it expects the financial support will boost sales up to one million vehicles. But it also warns that sales could slow down, due to negative impacts from the continued strong yen and the prolonged credit crisis in Europe.
